Belgrade to Bar railway
One of the most popular ways for overland travellers to reach Montenegro is by taking the train on the Belgrade – Bar railway line, one of Europe’s most spectacular rail journeys.
The train from Serbia to Montenegro is highly popular among locals and tourists alike and often sells out — especially in summer — so it’s wise to book your tickets in advance.
As tickets for this train cannot be purchased online through the Serbian or Montenegrin Railways, DiscoverByRail offers the option to book them through us for a small fee, which includes delivery to your hotel in Belgrade.
Please note that bookings for the train to Montenegro open 60 days before departure, so kindly send your booking inquiry to tickets@discoverbyrail.com only once the booking window has opened.
Trains from Serbia to Montenegro
Belgrade is connected to Kolasin, Podgorica, and Bar in Montenegro by a daily night train throughout the year, along with a daytime train that runs only during the summer months.
The night train, named the ‘Lovćen’, offers 6-berth and 4-berth couchettes, as well as sleeper compartments with a washbasin that can be booked as a 3-bed or 2-bed sleeper, or as a private sleeper.
Unless you book all the berths in a couchette or sleeper compartment — or book it as a private sleeper when travelling alone — you will share the compartment with other passengers.
The daytime train, called the ‘Tara’, usually operates daily from mid-June to mid-September, and has 2nd class seats only.
Here are the departure dates and times for both the Lovćen and Tara trains to Montenegro in 2025:
Lovćen: Departure from Belgrade at 20:30, arrival in Podgorica at 06:17 and in Bar at 07:23 the following morning (operates daily, year-round).
Tara: Departure from Belgrade at 09:31, arrival in Podgorica at 19:13 and in Bar at 20:37 (operates daily from 13 June to 14 September 2025).
The daytime train has a change of trains at the border station of Bijelo Polje between a Serbian and Montengrin train.
The route
Both the Lovćen and Tara trains depart from Belgrade’s modern central railway station, Beograd Centar.
It’s an absolutely stunning train journey from Serbia to Montenegro, as the railway line winds through breathtaking mountain landscapes and remote regions of both countries.
For a few miles, the railway line even briefly enters Bosnian territory, although the trains do not make any stops there.
In Serbia, the landscape is characterised by rolling hills, rivers, and deep blue lakes, which gradually give way to more barren mountains.
The most important stop in Serbia is the city of Užice, which is famous for briefly serving as the capital of the Partisans during World War II, when this Yugoslav resistance group successfully liberated a large part of the country from the Nazis.
In Montenegro, the railway line runs high through the craggy mountains, with the highlight being the crossing of the breathtaking Mala Rijeka viaduct, which held the title of the highest railway bridge in the world until 2001.
Among the most important stops of the train in Montenegro are Kolašin, situated at the foot of the Bjelasica and Sinjajevina mountains and near Biogradska Gora National Park, the Montenegrin capital of Podgorica, and the port town of Bar, the terminus of the Belgrade–Bar railway line.
If you wish to travel to Kotor or Budva, the easiest option is likely to take the train to Sutomore on the Montenegrin coast and then transfer to one of the frequent local minibuses or buses.
Delays are common on trains from Belgrade to Montenegro, particularly on the daytime train, so ensure you don’t book any tight connections to a bus, ferry, train, or flight after your scheduled arrival.
