The Baltics by Train: Book Your Baltic Rail Holiday

A rail holiday to the Baltic States – Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia – is a wonderful way to discover these beautiful countries in northern Europe.

Whether you want to make a grand tour of the entire Baltics or visit just Lithuania, Latvia or Estonia, the train is a great way to get there and travel around.

This is especially true for people who are seeking a city break in the wonderful historic capital cities of the three Baltic States, namely Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn.

However, each of the Baltic States has so much more to offer than just their capital cities, and it is well worth staying a bit longer on your rail holiday to explore places off the beaten path.

In Lithuania, you can travel from the capital Vilnius to Trakai, with its beautiful lakeside castle, or continue to the country’s second-largest city, Kaunas, known for its lively vibe, beautiful old town and modernist architecture in the New Town. Continue to Klaipėda on the Baltic coast, where you can take a short ferry ride to the Curonian Spit National Park and explore some of Europe’s most impressive sand dunes.

Latvia also has much more to offer beyond Riga’s medieval old town and Art Nouveau district, including the castles of Cēsis, Bauska and Turaida, the magnificent Rundāle Palace, the hills and forests of Sigulda, or cities such as Liepāja and Jūrmala.

Finally, Estonia is home to perhaps Europe’s most picturesque capital, Tallinn, with its beautiful medieval old town. Other places well worth visiting on your rail holiday include the university city of Tartu, Narva with its castle on the border with Russia, and Baltic islands such as Saaremaa.

Whether you’re drawn to the Baltic States for their beautiful natural landscapes, historic sites or vibrant cities, a rail holiday is the perfect way to explore the region!

Combine the Baltics with other countries!

Your rail holiday to the Baltic States starts with a train journey from your local railway station (or any other city of your choice), and you are free to tailor the itinerary entirely to your preferences.

If you are travelling from the UK, the main rail route to the Baltic States takes you through Belgium, Germany and Poland. From the Polish capital of Warsaw, you can then take the train to Kaunas and Vilnius in Lithuania. Once you’re in Lithuania, the other two Baltic States, Latvia and Estonia, are just a short train journey away.

Of course, you can make stopovers wherever you like along the way, with cities such as Brussels, Cologne, Berlin, Poznań and Warsaw being natural choices. You could even deviate slightly from your route to visit cities such as Amsterdam in the Netherlands, Prague in the Czech Republic, or Kraków in southern Poland.

Byway can even arrange a grand tour of northern Europe if you wish, combining the Baltic States with Scandinavia or Finland. Convenient ferries link Tallinn with Helsinki and Stockholm, making it easy to extend your trip with a loop through the Nordic countries.

If you want to mix things up on your no-fly holiday, you could also take a ferry from Germany to Klaipėda in Lithuania or Liepāja in Latvia instead of travelling all the way by train via Poland. Or perhaps take the ferry out and return by train, or vice versa!

The choice of which cities and countries to visit, and how exactly you travel on your Baltic rail holiday, is entirely yours! With Byway, everything can be tailored to your wishes.
