How to Book Online Train Tickets in the UK
The best way to travel around the United Kingdom (UK) is by train, with tickets easily booked online.
The British railway network can look a bit complicated to first-time visitors to the UK, with multiple train operators and a wide range of fares to choose from.
However, if you know where to book your tickets and what to look out for, it’s actually quite straightforward.
Where to book UK train tickets
By far the best website for booking train tickets in the UK is Transport for Wales (TfW), which allows you to book trains operated by every single British rail company.
TfW is the operator of train services in Wales and on many routes between Wales and England, but it can also be used to book tickets for any other British rail operator.
The reason I think TfW is best, and why I use it myself, is that it has an easy-to-use search engine and clearly displays all the information about the fare and train service you select.
Even when you are not travelling to Wales, it is still the best website to search for and buy tickets, no matter where in the UK you want to travel by train.
For instance, when you need to travel from London to York, a route operated by companies such as London North Eastern Railway (LNER) and Grand Central Railway, TfW will sell you the exact same tickets at the exact same price as on their own websites.
By simply using Transport for Wales as your go-to website for British train tickets, you do not need to search between different operators (or even know which rail company operates which route!), as you can book everything through TfW’s easy-to-use platform.
No booking fees are added when you book your UK train tickets on the TfW website.

British train fares
When booking train tickets in the UK, you need to pay attention to the fare you select. The fare conditions determine how flexible your ticket is and which trains you can travel on.
- Anytime fare: Valid on any train on your selected route on your day of travel, regardless of operator or departure time. These tickets offer full flexibility, although they are also the most expensive. They can’t sell out and have a fixed price, no matter when you book your ticket
- Off-Peak fare: Valid on any train outside peak departure times (the morning and evening rush hours) from Monday to Friday. The exact restrictions depend on the route and destination. Off-peak fares are fixed in price and cannot sell out.
- Advance fare: A discounted fare that is generally the cheapest ticket available, but also comes with the most restrictions. This saver fare is valid only on the specific train service booked, is non-refundable, and offers either no or very limited flexibility if your travel plans change. Advance fares are available in limited numbers and can sell out, so booking ahead is advisable.
The above fares can all be booked through Transport for Wales and are available for both first and second class tickets.
As always, check the fare conditions carefully before booking a British train ticket, so you know whether it can be changed or refunded.
